Very, very, very hard to find 70 -plus year old original Athearn box in exceptional shape.
    Box only.
This box is not decorated like others you've seen. No banners. No paintings or photos on the top.  Very plain uncoated cardboard material with stamping on the end panel only.  VERY GOOD shape considering it's age both inside and out. Minimal scuffs or marks (see photos).  Clear printing and nice dark stamping.  Stamped "
    E-195 Basic 40FT BOX
" on the end panel. This was an "Economy" kit that once contained the parts to build a boxcar framework (but lacked sides!) The modeler could buy them later on from Athearn once the major construction work was done, in a pretty wide choice of roads.  It helped spread out the acquisition cost for those on a budget.
This explains why no "road name" appears on the package.
The plain-ness of the box is likely intentional -to easily differentiate this from a "special" kit that would have contained decorated sides.
Irv Athearn moved his growing train business out of his Moms Van Buren, Los Angeles home address in 1948 to Hawthorne, California and started making HO scale trains that same year.  He continued to use the old home address on boxes and in advertisements until 1953, when Athearns address became 11929 South Western Avenue.
That puts this box in the 1948 to 1952 time period.  This is a really rare piece that is 70+ years old!!  Unreal!!
If you need a box to complete your vintage collection or to pair with an old Athearn wood and metal model that's lost it's box years ago, here's your chance!
Will be packed well to insure safe shipping.
    Thanks for looking!!!
    .
Again, this is for the box only!
